Film Review with Showcase Cinemas: Is Blade Runner 2049 really as good as the critics say?

Blade Runner 2049 got the critics sweating with excitement when it was released last week, but is the film really as good as they say it is, or are the critics keen to be seen loving what is a complex and sophisticated piece of cinema?

Set 30 years after the events of the original and iconic Blade Runner film, Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department, unearths a long-buried secret that could plunge what's left of earth’s fragile society into chaos. His discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) and uncover the intentions of mysterious villain Niander Wallace (Jared Leto).

Firstly, the visuals on this movie are incredible.  Watch it on the biggest screen possible and in 3D because the universe created here is nothing short of stunning.  Desert, snow, sun, rain, cityscapes, vast landscapes… the settings will have you gripped and drawn into the this universe, instantly.

The pace of the movie varies throughout - sometimes fast and thrilling action; then slower, sensuous scenes.   It takes it time to do the story justice but it doesn’t feel as long as it is (almost three hours).  There are no filler scenes whatsoever, so make sure you've been before the movie starts!

Gosling is perfect as the lead, completely authentic and captivating to watch.  Ford is Ford - a true movie icon who brings that star quality to all of his performances.

As with the visuals and the plot, the score is also worthy of an Oscar. Moody, atmospheric and full of bass, we absolutely loved it.

We aren’t going to go into detail on the plot because it would be a travesty to give anything away but what we will say is whilst you don’t have to have seen the original, there are some great rewards for those who are fans of it.

It’s moody, sexy (especially some of the spicier scenes between Gosling and the female leads) and absolutely captivating.

35 years after the original Blade Runner, this movie is testimony that quality is timeless. Do not miss it on the big screen and if you can, catch it in 3D at a Showcase Cinema or a Showcase Cinema De Lux. Book now via
