Why Fjällräven's Winter Coats are the real deal.
Ever since Fjällräven was founded just over 50 years ago, they have had one strong driving force: to develop products that make it easier for people to enjoy the countryside.
As far back as 1950 Åke Nordin developed a backpack frame that sowed the seed which would go on to become the Fjällräven company. And ever since its Örnsköldsvik beginnings in 1960, Fjällräven has continued to produce innovative, functional products which are appreciated by generations of outdoor enthusiasts across the world – and which have also received a number of distinguished awards over the years.
Fjällräven’s products are currently sold in around 20 countries. Over time, a few have become more or less classics – the Greenland Jacket, Vidda Trousers, Kånken Backpack and Expedition Down Jacket. They work continuously on developing materials, solutions and designs for new favourites – clothing, tents, sleeping bags and other outdoor equipment that can be used, loved and worn over many years of adventures out in the fresh air.
Fjällräven isn’t just for explorers. When you’re looking for a winter coat that’s durable, practical and fashionable, they’re second to none. The range is HUGE so there’s definitely something for all tastes and needs, but we’ve selected a couple of highlights from the collection in order to tell you more about the brand.
Take the Sarek Winter Jacket. It’s a light, lined trekking jacket with a long cut in G-1000. Many pockets and a storm hood with a foldable brim and detachable synthetic fur edging. It’s a timeless, long trekking jacket with exceptional insulated lining. The jacket will provide protection against the wind and rain, and moisture that builds up inside when you move about is ventilated out – which is important in cold climates where you do not want to risk getting cold because of damp base-layer garments. The coat has a fit which is just what you want – it’s generous enough to allow you to wear thick layers underneath without making you look or feel like the abdominal snowman. It’s great for ventilation and the jacket oozes quality – you can tell this isn’t from the high street.
We put the coat to the test and it absolutely keeps you warm, dry and insulated. The Sarek Winter Jacket comes in a variety of colours and sizes and is available here.
The classic Barents Parker is also a beauty. It’s described as a “robust, waterproof parka with synthetic padding suitable for changeable winter weather. Snug-fitting hood with detachable synthetic fur edging”. Again, this coat looks the business and does the job perfectly. There are loads of big pockets for practically, including a “hidden” inside one which is really useful for your phone or wallet. It’s less padded than some of the other jackets available making it really practical and on someone slim like me, it just looks great.
The coat is £425 and when you think about what you pay for a cheaper highstreet version, that’s a steal. This is the real deal. This is what the pro’s wear and therefore making a Fjällräven purchase means you’re making a real investment in something that will last. Get yours here.
The Fjällräven website is a haven for winter coats, bags, tents and accessories and there are comprehensive guides on trecking and more too, so get to fjallraven.co.uk to discover more.
