Jamie Vardy had a party at San Carlo - so we went along to discover why it's so good.
The San Carlo story first began in 1992 in Birmingham, when Carlo Distefano opened the first San Carlo restaurant. San Carlo quickly became a favourite with many of the city's residents due to its authentic Italian food, ambient atmosphere and high standards of service. San Carlo now operates throughout the country with leading restaurants in Bristol, Leicester, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and London.
The quality at San Carlo speaks for itself. When Leicester City Football club won the premiership they famously brought the city to a complete standstill when they chose to hold their celebratory lunch at San Carlo Leicester. Curious as to what makes it so special, we went along for ourselves.
Firstly, the staff could not be more attentive. Upon arrival they were so friendly and welcoming and made for a brilliant first impression. Our waitress explained the menu options, pointed out all the specials (there were many) and talked us through the drinks menu.
For starters, we both enjoyed the Nsalata Adriatica. A mixture of squid, prawns and mussels with garlic, extra virgin olive oil and sunblushed tomatoes this was fresh, beautiful and most importantly, authentic. We loved it.
San Carlo has a huge menu to choose from and we both struggled to choose. In the end, I opted for a Lobster risotto and my dining partner chose the Lobster Thermidor. Like the starters, our mains tasted fresh, full of flavour, and they were beautifully cooked and presented. The portions were generous and extremely satisfying and set San Carlo way above similar Italian chain restaurants that you will be familiar with. This is not standard food, this is high quality, exquisite Italian food.
We had no room left for a dessert so finished off with a coffee. We cannot rate San Carlo highly enough. Five out of five for the food and the service we received, and it’s outstanding value too. Try it for yourself and you’ll have no problem seeing why Jamie Vardy chose to have a party here.
