DVD Review: Pacific Rim: Uprising delivers on thrills and spills!
Set in 2035, Pacific Rim: Uprising tells the story of Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), a Jaeger pilot (not to be confused with the Jager bomb variety…although the film does feature actual bombs…hmmm. Anyway, Jaegers are huge robot machines that are controlled internally by humans). He is arrested for stealing Jaeger parts, and is given the choice of prison, or returning to the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps as an instructor. Conveniently for the film plot, he chooses the latter.
Here Jake is reunited with his former colleagues, and is soon back into the swing of things. Lucky really, as there is quickly threat of the whole of Earth being wiped out…spoiler alert…!
Cue impressive fight scenes between skyscraper sized robots and crazy monsters, great CGI, and the destruction of numerous cities around the world, culminating with a great showdown in Tokyo.
Alongside Boyega, Scott Eastwood (Fast and Furious 8, and Clint Eastwood) and Cailee Spaeny are among the cast. It was actually quite refreshing to hear a British accent as lead in a big-budget American flick, so bonus points for that!
All in all, a good, action packed film. Think Transformers mixed with Godzilla and Power Rangers, with a dash of Numskulls (that comic from the Beano) and you’ll be on the right track. Harvesting the good bits from these to create an action packed escapade that jumps around the world 17 years from now. Still no sign of hover boards mind.
