Review: Matilda the Musical is an unmissable masterpiece ★★★★★
Matilda The Musical is the multi award-winning musical from the Royal Shakespeare Company, inspired by the beloved book by the incomparable Roald Dahl.
With book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, Matilda The Musical is the story of an extraordinary little girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny.
Winner of over 85 international awards, including 16 for Best Musical, Matilda The Musical continues to delight audiences in London, Australia and on tour around the USA.
This brand new UK and Ireland tour is kicking off at the incredible Curve theatre in Leicester.
From the moment Matilda The Musical opens it delivers laughs, emotion, a razer sharp script and a score which is absolute genius.
The star of the show is Miss Trunchbull, with Craig Els in a role he was clearly born to play. His depiction of Dahl's evil Headmistress is one of the finest things we have ever seen on stage.
Second only to that is Matilda, played absolutely beautifully and the supporting cast of children who's singing, dancing and acting abilities will leave you gobsmacked.
The entire production is bursting with energy, memorising sets and bags of humour. To take a children's book and to turn it into a grown up musical (the recommendation is that kids who go and see it should be 6+ but it is definitely not a kid's show as such) is just sensational.
I haven't read the book since I was a child myself, but Matilda's parents and her teach Miss Honey are played so impeccably here that my magical memories of the book came flooding back..
Tim Minchin's score defines this show, and songs like When I Grow Up, The Smell of Rebellion and Naughty are just world class.
Matilda the Musical will make you think, reflect and most of all smile.
