Interview: Sam Bird on BBC Three's Eating with my Ex Celebrity Specials.
Eating with My Ex, the Bafta-nominated BBC Three show, which sees former couples reunited over dinner to pick over the bones of their failed relationships, will include two celebrity specials as part of the current, new 11x30' series.
Alongside the often awkward and revealing questions being served up on their plates, exciting new ingredients have been added to ensure that Eating With My Ex delivers plenty more heart-warming, funny and authentic encounters.
The new series launched on BBC Three earlier this year and episodes that are currently available to watch include a guy who wants to confront his ex-girlfriend over cheating with one of his mates, a harsh revelation over what exactly happened on a lads’ holiday in Zante and the man who unashamedly hopes to gain a friend with benefits.
The second celebrity episode will see Love Island’s Sam Bird reunite for a meal with his ex-girlfriend Elle in Norwich. Sam hasn't seen part time model, Elle, since he ghosted her and left for the villa. She wants to meet him again, but is Sam ready to pick up where they left off?
Sam tells us more…
Sam met Elle at the gym in their hometown of Norwich two-and-a-half years ago.
Sam was instantly attracted to her, and over the course of six months, both Sam and Elle went on regular dates to bars and restaurants. Their relationship was very much on/off, and both were career-orientated. Because of this they never made it official, and things came to an end when Sam appeared on Love Island in the Summer of 2018.
After Sam broke up with fellow Love Islander Georgia, Elle made contact with Sam, and now that he’s single, she wonders if there could still be a spark between them.
Elle would like to see if Sam’s newfound fame has changed him or if he’s still the same guy she met.
How did you and Elle originally meet?
I own a gym in my hometown of Norwich. Elle came into the gym and I needed some filming work done, I needed a girl to model. I mean I’m not going to lie, I fancied her at the time as well, so I thought I’d ask her about modelling in my gym videos and maybe ask her out on a date as well.
How long after that did you go on a date?
Quite soonish, it was a week, maybe two weeks.
Was there a spark between the two of you?
I’m a cheeky little chappy, so when I approached her about the filming I was probably flirting a little bit. On the text messages and stuff, you know all that kind of stuff.
Did you and Elle have a good time together?
We went on a date where we went segwaying. It was a fun little summer fling, we dated, it was a fun thing. She has a lot of energy, I have a lot of energy.
How did you leave it, because you went into Love Island - how did things end with Elle?
It was like one of those ones where she was busy doing the modelling and stuff, and I was doing my thing starting my businesses. I was opening a bigger gym at the time, so it was just one of those ones when you meet like twice a week, then it’s once a week and suddenly a week goes by and that, and then the texts messages drift off.
Then when you came out of Love Island Elle made contact didn't she?
Had Elle been on your mind?
Obviously after the show [Love Island] I came out with a girlfriend, so I was focusing on that.
What was it like when you sat down at the dinner table?
It was quite nerve-wracking really. I didn’t know how she would be, whether or not she’d talk to me or if she would be annoyed. At this point when me and Elle met up, it had been quite a few weeks since I split with my ex. I thought, "Well I’m single now, so I’ll have a bit of flirt." I didn’t want it to be awkward so I thought the best way to not make it awkward was just have a little flirt.
